The announcement was made today in Washington, DC, at a Climate Leaders Workshop where EPA Administrator, Christine Whitman, welcomed 11 new Climate Leaders Partners and recognized three Partners including St. Lawrence Cement for setting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.Climate Leaders, a voluntary government/industry partnership, challenges businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through a comprehensive climate change strategy. St. Lawrence Cement joined Climate Leaders last October and worked in collaboration with the EPA to set this aggressive, long-term emission reduction goal. Reducing CO2 emissions is key to St. Lawrence Cement and is consistent with its parent company, Holcim Ltd, commitment to sustainable development. St. Lawrence Cement is achieving CO2 reductions by improving energy efficiency and using mineral components such as GranCem®, fly ash, and silica fume as cement and clinker substitutes.
“Further CO2 emission reductions can be achieved through the permitting and building of newer, energy efficient facilities such as our proposed plant in Greenport, NY, that will replace the Company’s nearby Catskill plant”, said Philippe Arto, President and CEO.
St. Lawrence Cement will measure and report progress towards this goal periodically. Climate Leaders Partners work with EPA to develop their greenhouse gas inventory using the Climate Leaders’ Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Protocol. A customized emission reduction target which exceeds business-as-usual performance for the Partner’s sector is then set.
